Farm News: We harvested 10,000 lbs of sweet potatoes on Saturday – we are curing them in a hot, dry area, so that they will store longer – and then we’ll be giving them out all through late Oct and Nov! (and in the winter share). Remember our Gleaning event is on the farm this Sunday from 10am-noon, together we’ll harvest some crops that have been left behind for various reasons, and donate the produce to Long Island Cares food bank. If you are on Long Island (or heading our direction), we have our Pumpkin Festival “funpass” every Sat and Sun in October from noon-4pm including a bounce house, pony rides, pedal kart track, and farm train which are a lot of fun for kids. Free for CSA members!

Share Items: Oct 3 & 6
Veggie Share
1 lb carrots
1 bunch arugula
.25 lb mesclun
1 bu collards
1 lg or 2 small bok choi
.5 lb string beans, green or yellow
2 peppers
1 lb potatoes
1 bu Radishes
1 head Broccoli
1 butternut squash
Fruit share: 2 lbs Asian Pears AND 3 lbs apples. NOTE: Asian Pears don’t really soften much when ripe. They are ripe when they smell good, and are still firm. If you let them sit too long, they will go straight to rotten. Yes, a challenge, but still crunchy and tasty at the right time. Great sliced with some cheese!
Flower share: zinnias, sunflowers, celosia, cosmos, etc.
Egg share: ½ dozen pastured eggs
Farm News: Thanks to all who came out to the Garlic Festival! It was great meeting some of you for the first time, seeing longtime CSA members who helped out (and entered) the Garlic Iron Chef and Garlic Eating Contests, and those who made the long trek out from NYC! Collards and beans are loving the fall weather. This year’s collards are so huge, they remind us of elephant ears! Send in your interesting collard recipes, because you’ll be getting a lot of them this fall.
